Arthritis

Arthritis can be degenerative (wear and tear) or inflammatory (the body attacks itself).

Degenerative arthritis commonly occurs in the knee, ankle (usually post traumatic), midfoot, and great toe base. Initial treatment is almost always conservative maximising joint support, flexibility whilst utilising anti – inflammatory and rehabilitation techniques.
Where surgery is required Dr. Bourke is highly trained in joint replacement surgery which is usually performed in the knee and less often the ankle and great toe. He also performs ankle , mid foot and great toe fusions where required.

Inflammatory arthritis requires surgery less often until it causes major destruction of the joint. Dr. Bourke focuses on anti-inflammatory and rehabilitation techniques. If intervention is required it may consist of arthroscopic or open debridement, joint injections, joint realignment , replacement or fusion.
